Diction Lesson

Diction Lesson

Consider the following quote:

A rowan* like a lipsticked girl.
- Seamus Heaney, "Song," Field Work
_________________________________
* a small deciduous tree native to Europe, having white flowers clusters and orange berries

Then, answer the following questions in the COMMENT BOX:

1. Other than color, what comes to mind when you think of lipsticked girl?
2. How would it change the meaning and feeling of the line if, instead of lipsticked girl, the author wrote girl with the lipstick on?
3. Write a simile comparing a tree with a domesticated animal. In your simile, use a word that is normally used as a noun (like lipstick) as an adjective (like lipsticked).

Welcome to IB World Literature 12

The objective of this Blog is for us to extend our conversations beyond the traditional walls of the classroom. In a sense it is a form of discourse that invites insightful dialogue about the literature studied in our curriculum. Another essential objective is that it will allow me to post guided questions and to post documents relevant to our course. At some point you will be asked to contribute to an online discussion. Therefore, it is wise to become a member to this blog. If you have any questions, please email me at fdileo@buffaloschools.org or see me during my available prep periods (2, 7).

Respectfully,

Your IB World Literature Teacher
Mr. F. M. DiLeo
